Help,

My tank has been running for a year with no problems. Went on hoilday and left someone to look after fish. Within 3 days fish started dying (blue tang, yellow tang, butterfly, cardinal, fire fish). It appears as though they were feed with the correct portions of food.

Left now with two clown fish, one scooter blenny, one shrimp, two feather dusters and anemone.

Tested water no return:
Ph 8.5
Nitrate 75
Nitirte 0.5
Ammonia 1.2

after 50% water change
Ph 8.5
Nitrate 50
Nitrite 0.5
Ammonia 1.2

The only change made before going on hoilday was introduction of blue tang and anemone.

Can any one please let me know what would have caused this, also best way to bring the nitrate etc levels back to normal. Highest Nitrate level every was 25 although most of time at 10.

Many thanks

You probably answered your own question right there. Never a good idea to add any new livestock immediately before leaving. No doubt one or both of those critters brought some sort of disease to the tank, or just died, which harmed the others. Did the anemone die too?

As for bringing levels back down, water changes and I'd run carbon too.

no, when we came back it was in front of the powerhead on the top of the glass.
was it the water circulation???
was it the anemone? because some people say that wen u add them in to the tank the nitrate level goes right up. is dat true??
