K so, I have 5 neon tetras(thinking about getting more) in my 29 gallon. I just did a water change and I go to make sure everything is good, and I realize i can only find about 3 of them. This has happened before, then it turned up the next day but it was just hiding. But now there are two missing and i cant find them in the typical hiding place... so do they sink, float, or what? And what if one got burried under the gravel... would that be horrible cause itd make the water stats go up since theres something dead in there?

When one of my fish died, they didn't float, it sunk. Keep searching your tank, he has to be there somewhere. Check under oyu gravel too, but when you siphon your water, how much does the gravel move?

when i siphon it goes prety deep down cause i gravel vacum every time i change the water (once or twice every 2 weeks) but ya, im gonna keep looking in the gravel, if i dont find it is that like relaly bad or what?

Something you left out of your post were the other inhabitants of your tank

"29 gallon fresh water tank, 7 neons, 2 guppies, 2 bala sharks (not sure of the spelling) one red tailed shark, a newt, and two types of unknown other fish"

I'm reasonably sure that the fish may well have been consumed by the bala sharks, or the RTBS, or possibly the newt. It would be worth identifying the other 2 fish as well, as knowing what fish you have in your tank is definitely the best way to know how to deal with situations like this one.

Also, if you have posted before I'm sure you will have been told that a 29g tank is totally unsuitable for Bala Sharks. Balas get huge, and require schools of 3 or more. The recommended minimum size is 125 gallons.

neons are absolute MONSTERS when it comes to this stunt. I used to keep them. I would definitely check all around your tank area, on the floor, because fish jump. My betta jumped out once, and I found him flopping around on the floor. They can MOTOR, too, so make sure you include a nice radius in your search. Nooks and crannys, double check, as whenever a fish jumps out, they move until something stops it. Look in your filter, and all around, and inside the intake tube, (fish have been known to survive in the filter for days, eek.) pick up and shake all your decorations, as neons are little houdinis when it comes to weasling into hollows they shouldn't be able to get into. Swish the gravel around quite a lot.

It is also possible that the fish died of whatever cause, and were consumed by other fish. But I bet you will still find remains. What other fish are in your tank?

EDIT, someone else asked that already. Whoops.

it was 2 serpa tetras, am I am aware of the bala sharks, im getting a 100 gallon tank once i can afford it which will be soon since xmas is around the corner. so it was possible that they got eaten by the sharks?

we were keeping lamp eye tetras with african dwarf frogs and the tetra count went from 8 to 3 overbight with no leftovers

we found out the frogs were eating them. it is possible the sharks ate the neons if they are big enough to fit them in their mouth.

Oh, bala sharks almost 100% are eating your neons. At my lfs, tetras are what they feed the balas. I don't know how big yours are though.

I had two guppies that completely vanished from the tank. I can only suspect they were eaten.
