i got 9 cardinal tetras 2 days ago.

they all looked good except one, who was towards a corner and kinda breathed hard, and stayed away from the group.

next day i wake up and hes still in about the same place....

i come back from school and hes gone. ive looked all around the plants, in the filter, behind the tank on the floor just incase it jumped, everywhere.

i can not find this little guy
any other last ideas before i give up?

my only last idea is since im cleaning my tank tomorrow, is to do a good gravel vacuum and make sure i check every spot one last time.

Sometimes as soon as the fish is dead, other fishes eat them. I lost two yellow labs (1 inch) and I could not find the remaining of them at all! I had to re-decorate the whole tank so I took everything out, and still couldn't find them. So I assumed other fishes have eaten them... (Hmm... what happened to their bones? )

hehe... the butler. :p Anyway maybe it got sucked into your filter?..

Did you try checking in the gravel. Sometimes fish bury themselves into the gravel, just moments before they die. Atleast, the fish I buy do that.

What other fish are in the tank? Small fish are the favourite food of bigger fish

That's happened to me quite a few times to be honest. Fish have died and totally disappeared, never to be seen again. The tank does not smell and the levels stay fine.

I'd just keep an eye on the levels in your tank, but I would just put it down to natural instinct on the part of the other fish.

:/

I just had one of my neon tetras do that to me. A few days later I found little fish remains (but there was not much left). It appears he had been eaten as soon as he died.
