Hello, i was wondering if this behaviour is a sign of anything. My harlequins seems to be sticking their dorsal fin right up and swimming along side each other shaking their bodies. Any idea what it means?

Breeding???

If they start turning upside down under leaves, you know they'll spawning :)

I don't know what it is but mine do it quite often aswell, they also circle eachother like they are chasing eachothers tails lol, I don't know if it's males showing off to eachother or some kind of breeding ritual, hopefully someonne will have the answer!

#92###! My corys now these! My tank has turned into a brothel! Haha, awesome news though!

i have 5 platys , 2 males and 3 females , i have noticed over the last 2 days that 1 of the males is constantly butting the others in the side and is always chasing 1 particular female around , is that a sign that he is trying to mate with her ?

If you have a male and a female platy in the same tank, then that is a sign that he is trying to mate with her! Seriously, all the common livebearers breed like mad - both your males will be trying to mate with all 3 of your females. My male platy has even tried to mate with my female mollies. :hyper:

Have a read up over on the livebearers section :good:

god , yeah , lol , but i dont mind , i love them , they are beautiful , :D

They are nice, the first fish I ever bought were platies. What else do you have in the tank? I ask, because I had my platies in a community tank, and although the female was definitely pregnant, and exhibited typical impending-birth behaviour, we never ever saw any fry - the other fish in the tank ate them before we had a chance to save any.

just the 5 platies at the mo , plus 2 babies , i got a breeding box that floats around at the top , i only got them last week , and the shop sold them to me as cold water fish , so had to quickly act when another shop told me they were tropical, have been on the internet ever since learning as much as i can, i did not even know she was pregnant till i saw them swimming around , i managed to rescue the 2.

From what I've read on here, platies will also eat their own fry, but with a well-planted tank, with plenty of hiding places, some fry will usually avoid being eaten.

well i have a couple of trees in there , maybe i should get a couple more , am keeping an eye out now on any signs that 1 of them may be carrying again.

at this moment , my fiancee has just fished out another 2 babys , she gave birth last week , i do not think they are a new lot , as they are quite big for new borns , i thought there was only 2 survivors , wow , am so happy. :hyper:
