moving my fish from 10g to 29g; they are all bagged seperately right now (neons together, ottos together, etc).... i've been getting the tank ready since last thursday. the old filter is running in the new tank with the new filter running as well. they've been going for about 20 min. how long should i let them run before releasing the fish?

going to start acclimating them now... is about 30-40 minutes enough?

thanks for any help :)

as soon as the old filter is put in the new tank, you have about 2-3 hours to release the fish to avoid the risk of losing bacteria

I'd say just do what I do when I move a fish from tank to tank I just float the bag for 20 minutes then I open the bag and pour some of the tank water thier going in into the bag and then I close the bag and wait 5 minutes then I take a net and scoop the fish out and release them.

If I am going from tank to tank, and they are the same temp, I just net them, walk over a few steps, & put them in the other tank. All my tanks have water from the same supply, so there is no problem.

If there is a temperature difference of more than a couple degrees, I just put them in a cup with their previous tank water, clip it to the inside of the new tank for a while so the temp changes gradually, then let them loose.

Well I wouldn't think that every tank you have has the same water quality so wouldn't you need to let them get used to the different water quality?

Eh, me too.
Well, the first bit anyways..

They all get maintainance on the same day, 50% to 80% water changes weekly. Seven 20 gallon tanks set up with basically the same filtration, pretty much the same stocking levels. I switch angels between these tanks on a regular basis as they grow out & get sold.

They go from 10 gallons to 20 gallons to 55 gallons as they grow, with no more losses than when they are in their growout tanks between switches. Bristlenose plecs & corys get switched once in a while as needed, they do just fine.

I think I posted on the thread last week to do 25% water changes the 2 days before the move so that the water was very clear and clean and then just move water and fish straight from one tank to the other. You would then have to top off the new tank but it would still be much less stress on the fish that way. Bagging really isn't necessary.

Since they are bagged already and you can't move the old tank water, before you do put the fish in, check the pH of the bag water and the new tank water. If there is more than about .2 difference, I would spend some time acclimating them by adding new tank water to the bag every 10 to 15 minutes till you get the pH closer to the new water pH just like you would for new fish you buy.

Trust me, the first couple of times I tried this I was a little aprehensive. When you think about acclimating a fish from an outside source where the water may be different from your tank, you are slowly changing the water parameters in the bag by adding your tank water. I figured the water in my tanks isn't much more different tank to tank than the difference of adding a little of your tank water to the bag from an outside source.

Fish from an outside source, even from a breeder I know who has the same water as me get water added to the bag a little at a time. I'm with my tanks every day, and know what is going on with them. Other folks tanks I'm not positive about, so I err on the side of caution.

i did do the water changes in the old tank before i moved them. i followedThis Link on how to do the rest, which is why i bagged them... i did not end up adding any water from the old tank as when i pulled out the decor and (fake) plants, there was a lot of goo floating around. i have both the filters running on the new tank and a panty hose full of gravel from the 10g. i think it turned out pretty well; the temp is the exact same and all the fish are happy and exploring :)
