I ordered myself a nutrafin kit the other day, and is in the post, but today i thought why not try and make a DIY CO2 kit, so i did.

Heres what i used......

2ltr plastic bottle
2 1/2 ft of air tubing
one way valve
1 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of yeast
lukewarm water

i have the tubing going into my filter output, so that it difuses the bubbles/CO2, it works nicely.
This maybe only temporary depends how long it goes for, im just experimenting with the mix, so not sure how long it will last.

when i get my nutrafin kit ill use a different mix with either less yeast or more yeast, but i will run both kits at the same time to see if i get more plant growth.

o ye and before i put the tubing in the filter i was getting 13 bpm, within an hour.

Yep that is what I did when I first started with CO2, except I used two bottles and connected them with a T piece. It worked really well, but I was really bad at changing the mixture. I eventually got fed up with it and switched to pressurized  .

How long would you say i should stick with this mix before changing it?

Just watch the bubbles. When they start to slow down, change your mixture. In my experience I was changing my nutrafin kit every fortnight. But it depends on so many variables I.e how warm is the mixture kept. The quality and type of yeast, the type of sugar, the ratios you use. The list is endless. Sounds nerdy but I tried several diff combinations and made a note of the measures in each mix until I was confident that I could get no more out of the mix and that I wasn't changing the mix too often.
