First Time I caught my pleco

It could be a bad sign u know! Not to rain on your party! :p

Have you checked your water params of late?

Absolutely normal! They would do it if there was a problem with water quality but they do it anyway. I know this is correct because I asked the same question about my pleco and that was the answer I got from several people. :)

All plecs are from fast moving, highly oxygenated waters, so they do require a lot more oxygen in the water than many other fish.

Oxygen levels that are no cause for conern in other fish will cause a pleco to surface to breath.
If your plec does this a lot, it might be prudent to get an airstone in there.

On the other hand, plecs do somtimes surface as part of their normal behaviour too, so it's unlikely to be anything to worry about.
