Hi all this is my first post. Bought myself a fish tank on ebay, it's a 14" 22 litre one (not really big I know). I originally planned to have tropical fish but thinking about the size, the amount of work, and the fact i've not had fish since i was a kid, I'm gonna go with a cold water tank. Got a couple of questions though:

1) With cold water is it still important to do the water cycle?

2) How many/what type of coldwater fish do people recommend? The tank dimensions are (W x D x H): 14” (36cm) x 9” (22cm) x 11” (28cm). I'm open to all suggestions.

Cheers :)

How many gallons is that? I'm not sure but depending on that you could go with some fancy goldfish. They are very active and always on the go. I love mine, I have six.

Ok the tank is approximately 5 gallons, way too small for any goldfish.

In answer to your questions;

1) yes you still have to cycle the tank.

2)The tank is on the small side but you could probably get a way with 5 white cloud mountain minnows(although they do prefer larger shoals, so upgrading to a bigger tank in the future would be best).

My suggestion would be to get a heater and get yourself a betta as that's an ideal size for a male betta, or perhaps make it a shrimp tank of get a trio of african dwarf frogs, they are really interesting little creatures.

Oh yes, definitely too small for goldies. If you get a heater you can add a few guppies, that’s another idea. But I personally would stick to a betta. And you do have to cycle that tank. Every tank, even saltwater needs to be cycled.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Are Betta's the same as Siamese fighting fish? Also, at my parents house there's been a goldfish in a similar size tank to mine for a few years and he seems fine. Dont they adjust to the size of tank they're in?

Yes, bettas are the same as fighting fish. Well if fish are kept in a small tank then they are stunted and will develop a lot of health problems.
