Hello all,

I am new to fish tanks and would like some help please. I just bought a 29 gal tank and need to know what kind of fish i should put in and any equipment i need. I would like to make the tank look as natural as possible but no live plants. I have been looking around the web for different types of fish but i am having a hard time finding any that interest me other then the saltwater ones and i am sure that they are way over my head right now. Other then the saltwater i really like the puffer fish but everything says they are not community fish and i think that a 29 gal tank with one fish is kinda a waste. So any suggestions on fish would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know what type of filter and other equipment i should use and or need. I currently only have the tank and a canopy and stand. So i know i need filter lights heaters thermometers.

Thanks for any and all info

Vince

Before you put any fish in, you need to decide if you want to cycle your tank with or without fish. Some say it works faster without fish. You need to invest in proper lighting, a good filter, water test kits (the test tube kind, not the dip sticks), and a heater (depending on the fish you get). You can usually find realistic looking fake plants at your local fish store. As far as fish go you could try some dwarf cichlids like bolivian rams, they're fun little guys and they do well with other fish like tetras. I find that a 29 gallon tank is too small to keep a lot of fish in except small shoaling fish like neons or cardinals or small cichlids, though you should definitley read up on them, as some are very territorial, especially spawning pairs.
