Hi, i am having a 48*18*15 tank made with bottom drain, the sump tank is 48*18*15, however the guy building it says the hole needs to be at least 50mm but this sounds large to me.......also can someone tell me if the UV should go after the return pump to main tank or on the outlet to the sump? or does it not really matter.

Thanks

Mick

Larger the better ..more flow, and quieter from what I hear..
2 is better than one incase one gets clogged.. get 2 while you have the chance!!!

I dont have uv... but I would think it would go after the skimmer and any other things so the big particals are out of the watter and the light can zap right into the bad stuff...

Yup......It would go after the return pump

haha great
I wish I could magically put another hole in mine I want to put a refugum on to the system as well now :(
Oh well drill and learn :)

50mm is the right size as you will be able to fit 1 1\2" pipe and thish should handle return pumps of around 3500lph. I have a 5x15x18 and there are two things i regrett, 1, the size and 2 only having 2 holes drilled.

ste :)

:D Wow brill thanx for advice.... when you say it will handle 3500l/h do u mean max, wife just nearly had a heart attack as she thought i was spending a lot wanting two 1500 l/h pumps :D :D

3500 max yeah, but the more the better. 1500 is good but it wouldn't harm to up it to say 3000lph.

ste :)

 ooer is that 3000 per pump or in total as i plan to have two pumps just in case one packs up....was bad enough persuading the wife to let me have a marine tank....."It's no trouble pet honest" last thing i need is to flood the living room!! :( that would definately be a hanging offence! also when i finally get my tank will be going on a spending spree for rest of equipment...so may bombard you with loads of questions if thats ok? :kana: :kana:

ask as many questions as you like.

1500 per pump will be fine. 3000 per pump will also be fine  its up to you what flow you want going through the sump.

ste HATES to answer questions :p
and ste when you say you regret the size.. what do you mean exactly?

too big, too small, wrong shape?

:p okay
1. What sort of media in the sump tank
2. is a 19"*12"*12" trickle filter okay
3. could i do ....say one at 1500l/h and one at 3000 l/h
4. is it worth using miracle mud?
5. it will start life as a FO tank two clowns and some green chromis to cycle it
so what kind of lighting.
6 Will the clowns need an anenome
7 what kind of rockwork is best to produce a natural look
8 If i can manage this system could it be upgraded to include live rock
9 could i add coral
10 could i add more anemone
11 will i need a clean up crew for FO

:D :D :D :D you did say ask. If i know the answers now i can prepare my wallet with a little gentle persuasion......normally it just says "NO"  or is that the wife???

Mick

BTW when i get my tank will start to take pics to show setup and stocking.

ok, first of all I would avoide mirical mud as this is not really for beginers to marines and is not straight forward.

as for biological media, i would use coral gravel as it is cheap and is porus. you could use something like efhisubstrat by eheim but there is no real need. you may need to use carbon periodically and i would definatly use rowaphos phosphate remover to keep the phosphate levels down. this can do in a small internal filter sat in the sump.

I would avoide trickle filters as they are a little out dated, and if your not carfull, they may tusn into a natrate factory.

you could do that with the pumps if you wanted its up to you.

I would not use fish to cycle the tank. I would get a few kilos of uncured live rock if anything and just forget about it for a month and leave the lights off for this period otherwise you will have a huge algea bloom. as for lighting you would only need a white and a blue tube for a fish only. have the white on for 8-10 hours and have the blue coming on 1-2 hours either side of that and leave it on all the time the whites are on.

clowns will not need an anenomy and even if you wanted one, you would need to wait at least 4-6, preferably 8 months before adding one and would need much better lighting.

as for rockwork, live rock is the best. this can be very expensive. you can either use all live rock, get some ocean rock and have a layer of live rock over it, or if you know anyone closing down a tank, you may be able to get some cheap live rock which is just as good if not better as the shop bought stuff.

you will not need to upgrade to have live rock, you can have it straight away.

you will need more light for coral, either metal halide of 4 T5's

I would leave out the anenomy.

as for cleaners, i'd go for hawian hermits and pleanty of them. these grow quite large and are quite hardy. if you want a "predatory" fish only tank with triggers, groupers, pufers etc, then you won't be able to have shrimps but if you want peacefull fish, then I'd go for some shrimps to and a red brittle star.

ste HATES to answer questions

why do you say that, i don't mind answering questions  :D

ste :)

Hey... you didnt answer my question ... what do you regret about your tank again?

(I guess I ask for it when I am being silly all the time :p )
