Hi all

I am currently in the process of upgrading to a much larger tank than I currently have. As a result I'm now deciding which filter to get. Having always had a smaller tank, I am used to maintaining an internal filter. However, I am now thinking about an external filter. However never having had one I don't know what they need in terms of maintenance and cleaning, I.e. frequency ; change of media etc. Can someone give Me the quick lowdown on how an extra filter works and the maintenance required please?

How big a tank your planning dictates the size filter you would get. In terms of maintenance, it also depends on a few things. Like if your tank is planted or is fish-centric and planted, etc. In other words a lot of things depend on your situation. As for media, I have a fish-centric tank with few plants besides a handful of algae balls. I use sintered media and loads of foam of different grades. Simply put my config works fine.

I suggest that you tighten down on your specifics and I'm sure you'll receive many direct ideas.

Tank will be between 200 and 240litres i think.

Likely to be smaller fish, I.e. tetra, danios, corydoras etc and will be partially planted with live plants.

Based on the estimate, I'd take a look at the fluval fx4, It's a v2 design of a tried-and-true filter with over head, just in case. With a bit of practice you'll likely find it easy to clean and it has enough room for media experimentation. That means different grades of sponge and hard media, should you choose to go that way.
