Hey guys,

I have decided to create a journal for my new tank as I have learnt so much from the journals that are currently on this forum! Hopefully this journal will aid others who are starting out just like me.
I have never kept fish before of any kind so this was jumping into the deep end for me! All my information has come from Forums like this!! And a little from people working in lsf’s!

I plan to create a reef in my tank so it will eventually have fish and coral.
The tank I purchased at the weekend is a Juwel Rio 125ltr.
It came with a heater, lighting and an internal filter. After much debate I have decided to keep the internal filter as I am not too worried about the looks of the black box! In the future I may swap the sponges for something different or even take it out, but that won’t be happening for a while!

Along with the tank I have a thermometer, enough pre made salt water to fill it, Gravel and a bottle of starter bacteria.
I have been told to take the bacteria back as it’s not needed and the gravel does not state what it really is so I will be swapping that for something else as well.
I also purchased a background poster for the tank which was 2 inches too short so I will be returning that!

I am waiting for delivery on a Koralia nano 1600 power head evolution, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and Ph tests, a refractometer and some black self adhesive vinyl to put on the back pain of glass.

Once the black vinyl arrives I will stick that to the back of the tank and start adding some water!

Hopefully by the weekend I may be able to start thinking about adding some live rock! :D
If any one would like to help with what I need to do with the live rock regarding Transport, introducing to water and what the water needs to be before i.e. temp, readings, flow etc it would be very much appreciated.

I will try and add a picture of the tank soon as well

Luke

Cool, the start of your journey - dont forget to post a photo of the tank before you do too much to it :good:

If you are going to leave the black filter housing in you still need to remove the sponges etc - you really do not want them festering in your tank to cause you problems

I like to transport live rock in water as you get less die off - I have done it in various containers, old salt tubs, square containers, the sort that you store stuff in and can buy from B&Q etc - you get less die off.

Fill your tank with water, bring up to approx 26C, add your powerheads, put in your salt until you have an sg of about 1.025/1.026 - the water must be up to the correct temp before you use your refractometer or you will get an incorrect reading. You will need approx 35m per litre. Leave for at least 24 hours before adding your rock

I will take some dont you worry :p

O dear they dont sound very good these sponges :S will they be ok for a couple of weeks till i can get some small live rock sorted to put in it?

When i get the live rock will the lsf provide water to carry it with or will will i need to take some with me?

they will be fine for a couple of weeks, but dont use them for much longer than thatbut to be honest, why would you need them anyway, you will not have any livestock?

When i get the live rock will the lsf provide water to carry it with or will will i need to take some with me?

I would just ask them to cover the rock with water - they will say, 'you don't need to do it' and in theory you don't, but you will have more die off the longer they are out of water.

I will have nothing alive in there bar live rock but will the water not need some sort of filtration whilst it is sat waiting for live rock? and whilst it is cycling? (sorry if this sounds dosy :p)

I will buy live rock for the main tank then look for some live rock rubble to replace the sponges before I add any fish or cuc!
Adding live rock into the filtration later on may create a mini cycle i assume?

Yea it will be a 30min journey to the store So i will take a bucket with me and some spare salt water just incase!

Thanks
Luke

that is all you need :good:

but will the water not need some sort of filtration whilst it is sat waiting for live rock?

Eh, No :p

and whilst it is cycling? (sorry if this sounds dosy :p) It will not start cycling until the live rock is in there

I will buy live rock for the main tank then look for some live rock rubble to replace the sponges before I add any fish or cuc!

I wouldnt put live rock rubble in the filter housing, too difficult to clean, buy a couple of hooks so you can run a couple of media bags in there instead

Adding live rock into the filtration later on may create a mini cycle i assume?

The live rock is your filtration not the black box! The black box is just that, a black box

Yea it will be a 30min journey to the store So i will take a bucket with me and some spare salt water just incase!

Cool

Thanks

I think im still getting used to the fact that some rocks can filter the tank :p i will get used to it in time haha

Got my first load of deliverys yesterday! nitrite, ph and ammonia test kits and a refratometer! also got a bucket and timers to plug the lighting in!

just waiting for nitrate kit the black vinyl and my powerhead then I can start getting it going! :D

Nearly there :p
will take pics tonight!

Thanks

Ok Guys Ive found a guy selling 50kg of live rock for 180 quid. Im going to speak to him tonight to get about 5KG for £20 as I would like to get some rock from a couple of places rather than all from the same one. Here is an image of the rock

Does this look like ok Live rock to you? From what Ive read the purple on the rock shows its good stuff.

Thanks
Luke

Looks pretty good to me :good:

I would have 2 of the powerheads running in your tank you will need the extra flow. I have two in mine and I'm considering getting another one. You will soon see the dead spots and the bits where the powerheads dont get.

Looks fine to me, just have a sniff of it when choosing your piece, if it smells awful walk away. Coraline isn't always a good sign, if it is smothered the rock cannot filter

as long as there is flow and heat in that holding tank it will probably be ok
