I am curious if I would be able to keep a fire belly newt in a fluval edge (6 gallon). One benefit to the Edge is its not as tall as some typical 5 gallons, but while keeping a decent height it has a good surface area on the bottom (a good width and length). I am wondering if I could keep one in my Edge, and if so is it a bad thing to just have one (do they need to stick in pairs or no?), and if two would fit (i was only planning on one just because most say a 10gallon minimum for two.

Thanks

P.S. any tips/hints for keeping them is also appreciated

The only trouble might be feeding them; the edge is difficult (I'd imagine) to get your hand in to feed them.

What kind of fire belly? They grow different sizes depending on the type; and hence require different tank sizes.

I have 3 chinese fire bellied newts; I did have 2 in a 7.5 gallon; then I added the third temporarily and then I've upgraded them to a 16 gallon. They were ok in the smaller tank; however they seem much happier in the larger tank.

The newts don't need to be in pairs; they are happy alone. I have 2 aquatic newts and they rarely spend time together. I have one terrestrial who occasionally gets a visit from one of the aquatic ones but no I wouldn't say they are "social" animals.

Females I was told (chinese fire bellied newts) are a bit more aggressive than the males when it comes to feeding. However other species you can't keep more than one male together (or it's not recommended).

Depending on which "variety" of fire bellied newt it is; it may want some land (a floating turtle dock will suffice).

caudata in my footer is a site dedicated to newts and salamanders and frogs etc. You'll get some good specific advice on there.
