Yesterday i brought two pairs of these from Rare Aquatics, one of the females was acting strange, so i popped her in a breeding trap to keep an eye on her, today she won't eat, is just lying on the bottom of the breeding trap and her entire tail fin has rotted away. Any ideas? She is also a lot larger than the other female, as in larger stomach
The rest of the fish seem fine and are happy swimming around and eating

They are in a 240l tank and the stats are

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 20
PH - 8.2

Temp 25 degrees

Thanks

Matt

I have had this back from Rare Aquatics

Hi Matt The likely cause is the difference in water conditions our ph is only 6.8 nitrate is 5 yours at 20 is quite high the temperature is also a bit too low ours is at 27

Kind Regards
Jo

Are my nitrates really too high? Im changing over 20% of the water once a week min

20Mg/L is nothing for nitrate, your water is 13 times more alkali than theirs though, how long did you acclimatise for?

Either way you need to treat for Finrot- it can be lethal if it eats all the way down to the base of the tail/fin as septicemia infection can then set in killing the fish. Does she look abnormally bloated? 20 Nitrates is absolutely fine.

Oh looks like i have given the fish PH shock. I only acclimatised for 45 mins, so not long enough for the difference in PH. Next time il make sure to ask the shops PH level so i can take that in to account

Thanks

To be honest the fish doesnt look too bloated, just larger than the other. Il head over the the lfs to get some meds for this asap

I'd be tempted to go for longer next time, I'd drip acclimatise for 90 minutes, I still wouldn't definitely say PH shock if the others weren't affected however.

I will do for sure, when i brought my rainbows i did this, slowly adding water from the tank, so i totally messed up by not doing it this time round. Il make sure i dont make this error again

The other three are just fine, seem to be getting more and more colourful

Thanks again
