ive had my fire eel about 2 weeks now and he aint eaten nothing except 1 earth worm which i had to stick under his nose.i have even seen my other eel(which is half his size)take a worm from his mouth.he is so mellow he dont seem to bother competing for the food :/ anyway at the lfs earlier i noticed that they sell river shrimp for £1 a bag which must of been about 30 shrimp i hadnt noticed before coz they keep them out the back of the shop.i put about 10 in to see what happened and the response was unbelievable he ate 7 in about 2 minutes.3 managed to hide or it would of been 10 it was very cool to watch :) im happy i have found something he loves to eat i was worried a little coz ive read they can starve to death in aquariums.
just thought id share that with ya
my balas try to eat them too but the shrimp are too big for them to swallow so they are swimming round with them sticking out of their mouths

great to hear its feeding OK - i eventually got my fire eel used to hand feeding bloodworms, but since i had to fish him out of a 55g and put him in my 100g hes been hiding - seen him once or twice but he wont take food from my hand at the moment. Havent tried mine on river shrimp but sounds like it might be worth a try

your right it must just have been so hungry it didnt care about the light or me and my son stood there watching and cheering

becareful not to get him hooked on river shrimp, other wise thats quite an expensive fire eel you have there. If he's nice and healthy then sure give him to river shrimp to make sure he gets food but then try feeding only bloodworm for him for a about 4-5 days. Give him a top up on river shrimp then repeat until he takes bloodworm.

Personally i never had a probelm getting mine to feed, always took bloodworm, still does aswell as krill and any other smaller foods i put in, he also enjoys downing the odd river shrimp though.

thats great Cane76. i wish we had live river shrimp in south africa. here if you want to feed your fish live foods like that you have to breed or find it yourself. not that we have natural river shrimp but it would have been nice to add that to the food my eels eat.
