hi again everyone. not sure whether this is an emergency or not but i figure better safe than sorry. in the past 3wks or so i have lost my albino kribensis (female), my scissortail rasbora, and a guppy (male). my krib was fine, then started sitting on the bottom, couple days later she died, in her last day or so she'd become a little swollen but no scales sticking out or anything. then my scissortail up & died on me. he hadn't been feeding well but i had seen him picking stuff off the bottom & he was growing fine so i wasn't worried - was fine one day, dead the next. my guppy (i think) died of some kind of bowel obstruction or constipation (thanx to those who replied to that, sorry i couldn't get back to u - net died grrrr!). his belly swelled up, but even though i reduced feeding a LOT, even skipping feeds some days, he continually gorged himself on my plants & any food i did put in. i'd heard putting in a pea could help so i tried that but didn't do anything for him - was dead the next morning.

now my other guppy (male), i just noticed, has a tiny streak of red in his yellow tail and seems to be fading at the very edge. my colombian tetra can get quite aggressive, and even though he left my guppies alone when there were 2 of them, i have seen him chasing my remaining guy a bit. do u think this red's just a little bit of a nip that will heal up or should i be suspecting early stages of finrot?

tank's been set up since xmas, fully cycled, ammonia's 0, ph is around the 7.4 mark. tank size - 60L (15gal?). tankmates - 1 angelfish (only about 1inch, very placid, hardly notices he has tankmates let alone tries to eat them), 1 colombian tetra, 1 guppy, 1 neon tetra, 1 black skirt tetra, & 1 apple snail (yes, i'm aware the set up is far from good, am working on getting a new tank to give neon & black skirt & guppy friends of their own kind). diet - fed once daily (morning), with either flakes, algae pellets, fish pellets, zucchini or pea.

ok i'm really sorry this got so long, hope i didn't leave anything important out. thanx heaps for all ur help. michelle.

Hi Michelle,
Like you, my water was fine and the tank had been up and running for years... then I had a couple of deaths pretty close together. Fin rot was the suspect for the last fish to die. I read here somewhere to try melafix as I saw that another fish seemed to be starting the same way. I really liked the stuff - didn't get the horrible feeling when I add meds that it would do more harm then good. Followed the one week course - I arrested the fin rot, brought 2 immature (unintrested) male swords to FULL POWER ((I mean seconds after adding the first dose they were all over the girsl and I now have fry)). No more deaths and it most probably help my large pleco handle his injuries after getting stuck in a floating, cone, worm feeder. I'd give it a try, maybe it can help.

i'll see if i can track it down, sounds really good. looking at him this morning & i think it might just have been a couple of little nips & me freaking out but that stuff might help him heal up a bit quicker? anyways thanx again, congrats on the bubbies!!
