I have a 20 gallon and it finaly, after 3 months of waiting, has finished cycling...ammonia and nitrite are 0...i don't have a test for nitrate, should I get one? I have no algae or cloudyness....but do i need the nitrate test?

Yes, you definately need to get a test for nitrate, not only for the cycling but for all the time. At the end of the cycle (if doing fishless cycle) your nitrates are usually high and a 50-80% water change is required. So i would deffinately make sre you have a nitrate test kit.

i thought nitrates where harmless to fish? why do i need the big change?

just tested it, and it's at 40ppm....the tank just finished cycling yesterday....i thought the nitrate would be >250 ppm....but it's only at 40.....is that normal?

I did have fish while cycling...could that affect it?

<20 PPM for nitrate would be best. 40 is a little high you may have algae problems.
