well some of you know we've had a horrible last month, had no bath/shower for a couple of weeks, me and Ian got poorly, Oscar got really poorly, basically we were both run ragged for about 3/4 weeks trying to sort everything out and get ourselves better at the same time.

I'd just been doing the bare minimum with the marine tank, feeding and top off and I'd done a water change once, hadn't had time to sit down and look at it properly for ages. Anyway I'd noticed some problems coming on, quite a bit of algae growth and the candy cane coral was looking decidedly unwell last week. I'd thought it was the temp as it got pretty warm and we hadn't yet rigged up any fans to cool it or anything. So I'd been working to keep the temp down, did 4/5 days of it and still wasn't seeing any improvement in the candy cane so thought i'd either killed it or that the temp wasn't the problem. Coming up to this weekend everything was calming down, bathroom's nearly finished and we're both well again so though right on sat as well as the water change I'd planned I was going to run a load of water tests, try and work out what the bloody hell's gone wrong. Friday night fairly late I put some food in, everyone except Mr Grumpy (our purple firefish) came out to eat, then he came out, drifted along the back of the tank upside down then twitched and darted off back behind the rock work

So I started off running the RO for the water change, got it half mixed so i just had a bit of adjustment to do sat morning then i'd be good to go. Sat morning I finish off preparing the water and take the lid off to start taking some water out. Happened to look at the skimmer and realised the dial must have got knocked and it was turned down really low and therefore was doing bugger all, Aha. Didn't even bother doing water tests as I know what the results would be, nitrates must have been through the roof. Did a 50% water change and got it working again. Sure enough yesterday the candy cane looked loads better, it's still not 100% but must be 10x better than it was on friday so I'm confident it'll recover now and that I found the problem.

Sadly though I've not seen Mr Grumpy since, had a look for him but the CUC must have dealt with him :rip: Rest of the fish look healthy and are still feeding etc so I'm confident I've resolved the problem. Just wish I could have done it in tiem for Mr Grumpy, that's our first SW death. :-(

sorry for you loss, least you found the problem before more fish deaths. luck in the future. :)

you really are having a testing month!!!

Glad you got the marine tank fixed and the Oscar is on the mend :good:

i'll admit it's probably not the most enjoyable month we've ever had.

however we took yesterday afternoon off, i cooked an enormous roast dinner and we parked our behinds on the sofa for the grand prix. so it aint all trauma trauma trauma

Mmmm, roast dinner :D. Glad to hear things are back on the up and up. Water musta gotten a little foul there huh?

yeah, like i said i didn't bother to test the water like i'd planned, but i can guarantee you that nitrates were through the roof so no point testing it really!

we had roast beef, roast potatoes and parsnips, carrots, yorkshire puds and gravy. was absolutely yummy :D Was a joint of beef big enough for 4 people and we ate it all in one sitting

and also one of the plants in oscars tank is miraculously flowering, can't wait for it to open properly :good:

feeling quite cheerful today

glad its all getting better now and youve fixed the problem

ummmm yorkshire puds  lol

thanks :good:

know what my favourite thing about yorkshire puds is....... Ian doesn't like them that much, so I always accidentally make hundreds of them to scoff to myself :D
