I've never been a big Betta fan, every one I see in the lfs just seems to hang in the water with a droopy tail and besides the colour I couldn't see the attraction. I even had a Betta for a few days who came in a community tank I got from ebay; a red guy who just hung in the water in a corner. I never saw him move, mind you he was in a 240l with a RTBS, 2 large Angels and several other large fish all whom were rehomed including the betta.
Then I saw this fella today. My lfs has always had the little Betta cubes but it's only been in the last few weeks that they've actually had occupants other than the basic red or blue. There were some lovely coloured ones but again, they all just kind of sat there doing nothing except this guy. He made full use of his little 1l cube! Up and down, circling the plant and flaring all over the place! His fins were in perfect condition. According to the label he was a Blue and Green Half Moon and at £10.50 it's the most I've ever paid for a single fish but I fell hook, line and sinker for him.
Having lost 1 of my 3 ADFs yesterday I decided he could go in the 28l with the remaining 2 as I figured they were there first so he shouldn't see them as invading his territory. After acclimatising him I released him and he's been all over the tank since midday! I've not seen him stop and rest once. He's been in the frog's caves, around all the plants, behind the filter and I don't think there's a single place he hasn't explored. He shared a meal of bloodworm with the frogs and didn't even look twice at them (the cherry shrimp are a different matter but there's only 3 females in there and they have plenty of places to hide).

Anyway, enough excited waffle, here's some pics:

The pics don't show his true colours, he's more an irridescent turquoise colour which shows up a bit on the areas where the light has caught him.

I have to say that this is a post I never thought I'd be making! Me with a Betta! Goes to show, you can never say never!

I think he is!

He is a gorgeous colour. Now you have converted there is no going back :D

I may have been lured by one Betta but it'll just be the one, I can't find an excuse for 5 tanks!
I was watching him at luchtime yesterday and he was sitting in the frogs' moss ball cave with his head poking out and that's the closest I've come to seeing him rest since I got him on Sunday. He's constantly patrolling, investigating and being generally nosey!

You got into bettas in the same way I did. I never liked them, I always thought they were kinda ugly. But I guess it doesn’t help that they are always in bad containers.

Anyway I was talking to my friend about my fish and she said her boyfriend likes “the fighting fish ones with big fins” so I was browsing the aquatic section and saw a shelf of males; I looked at them and I also fell hook line and sinker for one little fish poked away in the back corner. I rearranged the shelf so that he was at the front; then I went back and moved him to the back and I thought if people want one then they’ll actually look and see how beautiful he is; and the next week he was there and the week after I decided he was mine, so I bought a tank, got it set up for him then decided X was the day I would go for him; I was paranoid someone had taken my gorgeous fish….I got there and was disappointed then I saw him shoved in the corner in water you could barely see through. I made my mam supervise the shelf whilst I ran and got the worker; who didn’t seem to understand my urgency lol. So my mam looked at the fish in his dirty water and said “he’s minging” and he was shoved into his bag and into a brown bag and taken home – my mam kept saying he was minging etc. So we got him home and I floated him in his new tank and he was excited. I let him out a little earlier than I probably should and he’s been a right character ever since. My mam now calls him “her beautiful boy” and I plan on buying my own house soon and she’s decided she will be coming on visits to see him.

He is such a character as well; he gets talked to a lot and my boyfriend had come in, said hello to him and talked to him for a minute; he swam to the back of the tank and then when my boyfriend turned away…Paddy (fish) swam from the back of the tank to the front of the tank flaring at him (it was sooo funny) so my boyfriend turned around and had a few words with him (lol) and he got directly flared at. Paddy went through a phase of swimming away from my boyfriend whenever he could and it was only last weekend when he actually swam to say hello to him (I’ve had Paddy a year now). Hopefully they’ll get along as they will be living together soon hahahaha. The boyfriend or the fish…hmm?!

I can’t see your pics (they are blocked at work) but I’ll look later on.

I have Paddy in with shrimp and he doesn’t bother with them – so much so that they sit and poke him in the face then he swims off annoyed. He will however chase them if they swim in front of him but if he swims past or they walk past he is ok.

He just looks at me and you can see him going “what are you putting in with me now”.

He sounds like a real character! Mine is not bothered about the shrimp either though I was a bit worried at first. He's not realy eaten anything with any gusto except bloodworm until tonight when I tried him with some large (400 micron) fry food from ZM foods. He definitely enjoyed that!

When you move out you'll have to get a replacement Betta for your mum!

Paddy likes the hikari pellets he wouldn't eat anything else when I got him, my girls eat tetra betta and of course treats. One of my girls is undergoing treatment at the moment and she will only eat treats, I am not impressed with her lol, little madame.

I did offer to get a betta for my parents but they can't be bothered with tank cleaning etc. I have an empty tank sitting waiting if they do change their mind lol.

I decided to buy a few Bettas myself...

I have 2 kings 3 halfmoons and a crowntail

I especially like the betta in the 2nd pic. I love how it looks like shiny hair. the individual lines in the fins look so solid!

he is very pretty. I have a pink and turquoise half moon. unfortunately he has it right now so he is not showing off himself, but with the treatment he looks like he is going to pull through. I also have a blue veiltail and a red crown tail.

I love the color of your fish. It is almost identical to the color of the nice veiltail that lives in my 45 gallon with some wild type endlers.

thats always how it is when you see them in those tiny cup, lifeless and still... dont be fooled and turned off by it because bettas do live up to there names as beautiful fish, its just the cups do a great job at limiting their beautiful colors, curious, interesting personality. once rehomed in a nice tank they will flourish. youll be surprised.
