I've never been a big Betta fan, every one I see in the lfs just seems to hang in the water with a droopy tail and besides the colour I couldn't see the attraction. I even had a Betta for a few days who came in a community tank I got from ebay; a red guy who just hung in the water in a corner. I never saw him move, mind you he was in a 240l with a RTBS, 2 large Angels and several other large fish all whom were rehomed including the betta.
Then I saw this fella today. My lfs has always had the little Betta cubes but it's only been in the last few weeks that they've actually had occupants other than the basic red or blue. There were some lovely coloured ones but again, they all just kind of sat there doing nothing except this guy. He made full use of his little 1l cube! Up and down, circling the plant and flaring all over the place! His fins were in perfect condition. According to the label he was a Blue and Green Half Moon and at £10.50 it's the most I've ever paid for a single fish but I fell hook, line and sinker for him.
Having lost 1 of my 3 ADFs yesterday I decided he could go in the 28l with the remaining 2 as I figured they were there first so he shouldn't see them as invading his territory. After acclimatising him I released him and he's been all over the tank since midday! I've not seen him stop and rest once. He's been in the frog's caves, around all the plants, behind the filter and I don't think there's a single place he hasn't explored. He shared a meal of bloodworm with the frogs and didn't even look twice at them (the cherry shrimp are a different matter but there's only 3 females in there and they have plenty of places to hide).
Anyway, enough excited waffle, here's some pics:
Showing off his fins
Investigating the spare moss breeding mop I keep in there
Doing more investigation
The pics don't show his true colours, he's more an irridescent turquoise colour which shows up a bit on the areas where the light has caught him.
I have to say that this is a post I never thought I'd be making! Me with a Betta! Goes to show, you can never say never!
