here you go. i'm not a rainbow buff (though i'd love to be). i've had about 5 different species, these two being my favorite.
since i had to give up on my idea to get a discus, i might just get another 4 rainbows soon...in the meantime, these are my babies:

rainbows.jpg

from left to right: Elizabeth II (we know it's a male, long story), Bishop II, Carl, Steven

as you can see the two boesemanis are slighty different coloration, with Carl being orange rather than yellow for the most part. i think i read somewhere that depends on the lake they come from?

the difference in color between the two m. lacustris i attribute to Steven (the far-right one) to have been introduced only 2 days ago. he is longer than my other m. lacustris, but also shallower. i dont know if it's lack of food at the store or this guy's genetics, i'll be watching his development.

i can't wait until these guys mature. i've had a total of 9 different rainbows this far, but all juvenile! can't wait for my boesemani to get chunky :hyper:

anyways, sorry for wasting your time!

Fantastic fish! I can't beleive your'e apologising for wasting our time when you took the time to put an amazing picture of your boys on here. What camera did you use and how many pixels? I have to wait for ages before I can get a decent shot. How big are these guys?

that's because having been a photographer, i can tell how bad this picture really is :shout:
the camera i'm using is a Olympus 720SW...only 7.1MP and really crappy at most things other than bright sunny day outdoor pictures. the reason i picked this camera, however, is that it can go underwater and record video, image and sound underwater! and it's also shockproof, so if i throw it at someone or drop it, nothing happens. at the time when I bought this camera, i also had $5,000 worth of SLR equipment, which sadly i had to sell since then :-(

anyways, the rainbows are about 2" each only...they're still very much immature. i cant wait for them to really get their cool shape when they mature! :hyper:

My camera's a Panasonic FZ7 6.0 MP. I bought it a couple of years ago at a reasonable price. Like yours it takes great outdoor shots but really crap in dark areas, closeups inside and moving subjects. How long did you have to wait to get all 4 boys in the shot? I haven't been able to take pictures of my fish for fun yet. I only seem to take pictures of them when they are sick or near death so I can post them on here to get a diagnosis .
Looking at your picture I couldn't have guessed these guys are only 2" they look huge. The difference in these guys is amazing.Especially the colours, size and tails. Do they differ in personalities?

Very nice fish, I do love rainbows.

Would it be possible to try and get another pic of Carl? I have a rainbow that I bought as an "orange rainbow" and looks very similar to that pic!
Though he was a little blue 1" fish at the time (I got him because he was on his own and being picked on by tetras), now he must be like 5". I have no idea what species he is though, I just keep him with one boesemani...that I purchased for the same reason lol, and to keep him company.
I would have thought most rainbows are bred for aquarium use though, I'm not sure about the lake thing.

As far as the coloration goes, color varies by individual. There are so many factors that play in coloration that it's hard to pin down exactly which one is responsible. It could be genetics, diet, age, etc. I have some fantastic Lacustris (turquiose) rainbows and each is colored a little differently. All beautiful, but different.
