We finally set up a hospital tank in a corner of Linda's she den.

This is not in response to any particular current problem. It will be used to isolate new fish, although the spot we purchase our fish from isolates for 3 - 4 weeks. It will of course also serve as an isolation chamber should any of the critters exhibit health problems.

The tank is a 30 Breeder that held children previously. It was replaced by a 40 that is divided into three sections. The 30 was moved with its' small gravel and sponge filters so I am not expecting much in the way of cycling. It will be populated with a few Rosey Minnows that I took from the pond to keep the cycle active. The 40 is being cycled but should get a jump start from a small HOB that was hung on the back of the 90 for three weeks as well as sponge filter taken from another tank that was over filtered, (a new sponge was placed in that tank to go with the remaining sponge). The 40 already has a brood of Swordtails and will get a brood of mollies later today. The livebearers are serial rapists and nymphomaniacs. Linda is now allowing me to cull the younglings. An improvement in reality, I think.

Anyway, this is the next logical step, perhaps late in coming, in our fish keeping.

It's always a good thing to have a hospital or a quarantine tank at home. All fish freshly purchased will be kept in quarantine no matter where they're coming from. Even if they come from good water, if the water parameters they're in exceeds the water parameters of the water in my tanks, I don't want to risk potential problems. And not just because of the water parameters but also because of hidden illnesses.
