recently i purchased final fantasy dissidia. i have been a fan of the series for a while and listing to x's sad piano music brought me way back. so here is my question how many final fantasy's have you played? (all games count, from 1-13 sequels, crystal, tactic and chocobo)
list in order your top five games and give a good reason why they are in that spot. like stated above all the games count here from the final fantasy series. what keeps you coming back for more? or if you played a game and didn't like it give a honest reason why, maybe a member can direct you to a better story. please be mindful this is members opinions so please be kind. i will post my own opinions later.

First was 7 when it came out. I was amazed.

I've now come to realise the games annoy me because of the whole leveling up thing slowing you down.

But good music, good story.

Never played them but wan't to get the new one for the ps3 just don't know if its worth risking £40 for a game i may not like. Is the new one good? do you notice that its a turn based game?

Ive played 3 7 10 x x-2 11 12 13 crisis core, dissidia, echoes of time, crystal chronicles and ring of fates [not in that order I can't remember that] id like to start 4 though at some point

x-2 -first one i ever played from someones recommendation, I couldnt put it down though I should have played X first...
x - after x-2 I did this one, and it was beautiful, I actually cried at the lake scene :(
crisis core - i liked this better than 7, the fight with Seph and the music was just epic!
13 - was something new and fresh, the battle system was engaging and i felt for teh characters, some tactic was needed
echoes of time - a really fun ds game, real time battles and puzzles

Ive never not liked any FF game lol but im happy to hear any other recmommendations

the games i have played in order is 7,8,10, 10-2,3,4,12, reverent wings, and dissida

for me my rank goes like this in my top five
4: (the DS version) now i first bought 4 when it was in gba form, but never got around buying it. it was in the ds version that i really sit down with this game. i was amazed, the characters are likable even lovable (i will admit the only video game character i ever fell in love with is Cecil) the story is engaging, you feel the emotion of the situation they are in. the twist ending which i will not spoil for those who have not played this game, is amazing. putting 4 in my number one spot is an easy call for me, because though i started with 7 i think the story of 4 is far superior to 7's and is over looked.

10: while i played 7 and 8 before hand, 10 grabbed my attention from the opening screen. the somber opening piano that is in the title screen sets the tone for the whole game. 10 was the first ff game i bought music for just because it was so good. while tidus can be annoying at times (i hate the laughing scene) i think 10 did a better job then 8 in terms of writing a love story. 10 is still the only final fantasy game to make me cry,
and that to me is a sign of good writing when you can engage the player emotionally.

12: was just fun, the battle system made the often tedious task of leveling up , not seem so bad. the music while not as good as the other games was still noticeable, and the story was fun. i liked that Vann while a main character is not the driving focus of the game, its Ashe and Balthier that drive the game and we are watching what happens almost though Vann's perspective. that was a neat twist to a game i think.

7: was the first final fantasy i have ever played, i was amazed by the story, and the music, i knew nothing about the series before hand. i was actually refusing to buy them at first because i though all of them were connected to each other. anyways my bf at the time and I got in a huge fight and he told me what happened to one of the main characters in the game. that and having to watch the scene where she dies over and over and over again, because i couldn't beat the monster that followed sucked the life out of this game for me. its low on my list because honestly, half the characters are optional, while the music is good not as good as some of the others. frankly i didn't find the story that emotionally engaging.

8: this game almost didn't make my list. while i like 8 i hated the main character (i don't care if i am a girl, doesn't mean i have to like him) he is moody, rude. 8 by far though set the pace in music with the moon waltz, and breezy. the graphics on the game are slightly better then 7s, which have a wow factor. what saves this game on my list is the music and the graphic it sets a nice pace. the story can get confusing with the Lost like feel to it. i look forward to another play through with this game i am hoping it can change my opinion of it. i used to like it, that is until four.

I've been playing the final fantasy series since I was, like, 3 years old lol.
They've had their ups and downs (The worst one being mystic quest) But I might as well list the ones I've played in order of me playing them:
-Mystic Quest
-FF2
-FF7
-Chocobo Racing
-FF8
-FFIX
-FFX
-FFX-2
-FF Crystal Chronicles
-FF: DISSIDIA
-FF: Ring of fates
-FF12
-FF 13
-FF4
-FF3
-FF: Tactics
Out of all of these my personal favourite is 4. It was perfect in everyway and its soundtrack was spot on.
Out of the main series my least favourite is 7, it is severely overhyped and there are so many better games and stories in the series that aren't filled with angst, though it does have one of my favourite soundtracks of all time.
Mystic quest has a funny story behind it, because although it was titled mystic quest, It's technically a final fantasy Gaiden (side story). Squaresoft made it to introduce newcomers in the US to the series, and the gameplay played more like early zelda games than the final fantasy gameplay everyone knows and loves.

If I had to recommend any, they would be:
-FF4 (Terrific score, brilliant story that is as simple as it gets)
-FF8 (One of the most underrated in the series, brilliant story, brilliant characters)
-FFX (I think most people would have played this and where it isn't the best in the series, it more than
makes up for it with terrific gameplay and a great story. Awesome score too)
-FF12 (Another severely underrated game. Brilliant characters and great story)
-FF IX (Some would consider the best game out of them all, I don't, but it is with merits)
-FFVII (I'm only recommending this because of how well known it is)

Never played them but wan't to get the new one for the ps3 just don't know if its worth risking £40 for a game i may not like. Is the new one good? do you notice that its a turn based game?
some are i liked 12 because it was live fighting not turn based, made leveling up not seem to daunting.

Well I find that turn based is a lot better for levelling up, and 12 was technically turn based too, you couldn't do anything else in battle but run around a bit.

FFXIII can sometimes be one of the easiest in the series too, as you only control one character in battle, the other's are controlled by the computer. You assign roles to each character (like Medic, commando, ravager) and the computer does the rest. But it is turnbased.

I would recommend 13 if you liked X. It's made by Tetsuya Nomura, the guy who made X-2, and the story is quite deep and involving, but its is very linear for the first 25 hours (It's necessary to the story though).
If you like live action games, then I would wait for Versus XIII sometime next year. It's supposed to be a lot like the kingdom hearts series (again, by Tetsu) and not turn based at all. It's also PS3 exclusive, which means it will make buying a PS3 for it seem a lot more worth it.

Sounds like I may wait for that unless I can get 13 at a bargain price, Balders gate was one of the few turn based games i really liked for the PC and the ps2

i must say i am both surprised and impressed by your responces. i have tried to say on other Final fantasy forums my own opinion just to be shouted down. your responces are full of intellegence and a respect for the game.
i am also surprised by the number of final fantasy lovers they are.

so i think you guys should pick a final fantasy based question to ask next.

tbh i only played crystal chronicles and i hated it, turned me off from the series completedley, and i was gonna give another go with 13, but Yahtzee convinced me otherwise, google zero punctuation and look for the review of final fantasy.

I find reviews of anything are normally a really bad way of deciding on stuff.

Unless you have EXACTLY the same taste in games then your opinion will be different. Add that to the fact that finally fantasy is already kind controversial, and you may have a guy that just hates it because it's final fantasy so will just spend the play time before reviewing looking for bad things to say.

Best thing to do would be download a demo and see for yourself.

Of course you may well hate it but at least you would have given it a chance.

I'll be buying it for my wife once I finish assassins creed. So she doesn't kick me off the ps3

some games i go off of reviews others instinct or cover art. i had no idea what i was getting into with the promoted glory of Heracles but i found i loved it. it was a game up my ally with Greek mythology thrown into a game i was besides myself. i think when you try something new, other ppls opinions are valuable but experience and knowing the type of gamer you are help a lot as well.

Yup. And if you're talking ps3 (and probably xbox, and I'm sure pc too) you've got the psn. Where you can download demos.

I loved heavy rain. But I advised others to try the demo first. Because as much as I loved it, others may not. Now if I was a reviewer for a mag, I could have caused hundreds of people to buy it that hated it. Same goes the other way. Just because one person hates the game and has found lots of annoying bits. Doesn't mean you will feel the same.

So my advice: download a demo. Make up your own mind.
