bettamax is usually good, i found that melafix isnt' all that bad either. As for how long you treat it...i'd give it the first week or so, see if there are improvements, and then just switch to salt and clean water so you don't over-medicate him for too long.
I have given him 3 doses as once every 3 days with a small water change before hand. I guess I'll make this the last one and just go with the salt then. Thanks for the advice!
np good luck wiht him, it you see the finrot coming back you can always use the medication again. I perfer to only use the medication in the worse case only because i just dont' like the idea of exposing my fish to the medicine all the time, it seems to me that they'll get desenitized by it
salt and keeping the water clean should be enough to keep the finrot away
IMO, bettamax isn't strong enough for serious cases. melafix is proven though. what i use is a product by aquarium pharmaceuticals called "fungus cure". it contains victoria green b and neutroflavine. it works.
Melafix was awesome in the cure for my boy's fins... tried bettafix, but didn't do half the job that I would have liked.
When salting the water, please remember that salt does NOT evaporate along with the water. Only add aquarium salt when you do a complete water change, and only add a minimal amount when doing LARGE partial changes.
