So, I changed my walmart boy's (who I'm calling Wilbur) water last night, because he's in such a tiny container, and went to sleep, I wake up this morning and his entire top fin was gone and floating around his little tank. is it possible it was fin rot by some weird chance, or did he somehow manage to bite his top fin off? I put a little melafix in his water and moved him to a darker area, he was sitting next to my other fish, that may have stressed him out some. I dunno. any suggestions?

****UPDATE**** Well I got home from work, and I see now that Wilbur has some sort of fungus looking stuff growing on him, looks almost like, peeling and a fuzz or something. Anyone know what this is? and should I dose him now with the Jungle fungus clear? :(

Im not sure how fast finrot works but i dont think it could happen overnight.is their nothing he could ov caught it on???????
anyway treat him with salt baths and the melafix and just keep himin a dark quiet area and hope he imporves in the next few days

Upon further inspection there's an odd, reddish tint on his sides, twords the back, it's like a light red or pink-ish blotch. eek.. and I have to work from 1-10 and I don't know what to treat him with ugh.

And there's nothing but him and the water in there. so nothing to get caught on.

also, Should I apply some JFE? and because he's in such a small container (under a gallon) how much of the little tablet should I put in? all? or break it into a smaller piece?

ok, I changed his water to rid the random finnage that was floating.. I added some salt and melafix.. hope he does ok.. please help me out with some thoughts throughout the day, as I have to leave for work now! :) thanks.

If I had to guess what happened, he probably got irritated by the fish in the bowl next to him - was flailing around, caught a glimpse of his dorsal fin, latched onto it and ripped it off. It probably happened in about 2 seconds. Someone frantically posted on this very site that she/he had witnessed that exact thing happen.

It's probably a very good thing that you got him moved to a darker quieter area.

What's JFE?

Thanks, I was freakin' out :) just a little. I added some salt and melafix. and fresh water, and JFE is jungle fungus clear. :)

Losing a major part of his body is probably a pretty traumatic experience - you should keep a very close eye on his over the next few days. But I think what you've done thus far is exactly what you should be doing!

Good luck with him! :)

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like you are doing what you should. Is he warm enough? Is there anything rough in his container -- plastic plants, sharp gravel, etc? If so, take it out. Good luck!

Usually red streaks on the body indicates septicemia. I have never owned a betta, but if an angel had red blotches, or streaks of red on the base of the fins, this is what I would suspect. It's a nasty one, oxytetrecycline hydrochloride is the thing to use.

Well, I just changed his water and added the JFE, so.. we'll see, I'm weary of him even making it through the night, he looks so weak, when i change him and the water current moved, he kinda flipped and had to work to right himself, I have his water lever low.. soo.. we'll see.. be strong little boy.
