Hello,

My little guy seems to have developed fin rot. I noticed last night that his tail edge is black and one area is noticeably shrinking.

I am assuming that the tank nearing the end of being cycled has caused the fin rot. I do weekly 20% (1 gallon) water changes in a 5 gallon tank. He has 2 ADF's as tank mates. Everybody gets along. I feed him and the adfs specific amounts of food and yank out what they don’t eat. The tank seems to be clean but obviously it isn’t.

Now I have some questions.

1) What medicine do I use to cure him of his fin rot?
2) I have a 1 gallon tank I can use as a hospital tank. How long would he need to be in that tank?
3) I have read some cases of they might have to be isolated for as long as a month. Won’t he become depressed sitting in a 1 gallon after being in a 5 gallon for so long?
4) Do I sanitize the tank? It’s almost done being cycled and it would be a shame to have to start over.
5) What do I need to do with the tank so that when he returns he does not get fin rot again? 100% water change? Clean all the stuff in it?

Thanks,
Jason

Fish deseases are always present in the water in any tank but the fish only gets them when it has been under some sort of stress and its imune system is no longer keeping up as well, stripping the whole tank down is only nesarsary when you have some realy infectious and untreatable like internal parasites but with finrot its not nesarsary.

There are quite a few finrot meds available that you should be able to get at your lfs, using aquarium salt in the 1gal tank on the betta will also help get rid of the finrot too. After the finrot has disapeared its best to continue treating it for a further week even if there are no physical symptoms it will help prevent it from coming back.
The 1gal tank will be fine for the betta, he may not enjoy it as much a 5gal tank but it will more than surfice in safely treating him so it is in his best interests :)

I have had a betta with fin rot before, luckily I caught it early like you have and it was cleared up in 2 weeks.

I did 50% daily water changes and used Wardleys' Promethyasul in a half dose for one week. Then for two days I only did water changes, no promethyasul, to give him a break. Then I repeated the course.

After the fin rot is gone (blackness gone, fins stopped fraying or receding), you should still do the 50% water changes daily for about one week more, just as a precaution. Then when you know you've kicked the rot in the butt, you can GRADUALLY increase the time between water changes.

Good luck, hope your boy recovers soon!
