Ok i have a whole bunch of questions that i need help with! Here goes:

What is fin rot? How can you tell if your fish has it? I have a betta that i suspect has it now but i am not sure. How can i go about treating it? Is it contageous? And also are there any steps i can take in the future to avoid my fish getting it?

Hopefully someone can help me!

Fin -Rot is the erosion of the fins. It is common in Bettas due to their long finnage. Check first to see that you have no fin nippers in your tank as this is often the first cause of damaged finnage in these and angels. There are other causes of course, but elimation is the answer here. The term fin -rot encompasses a whole array of other bacterial and fungal infections. You need to be more specific about the "damage". You are right to be concerned, left untreated the rot can reach the body thereby killing your fish. There are several treatments available, but first you need to identify the cause and the type of infection.

Most often fin rot is either introduced to the tank via an infected fish, or caused by less then ideal aquarium conditions. Any kind of stress to the fish will make them more susceptable to any disease, and poor water makes it almost unavoidable.

Hi steffi0122 :)

I just answered this question on another thread, so I'll give you a link to it:

These infections are common among bettas and other fish that are kept in small, uncycled tanks. The best thing to do is to keep yours very clean and the temperature stable. Be sure, too, that no uneaten food is left on the bottom of the tank.

Good luck :D
