Hi all,

I currently have in my 230ltr tank:-

6 neon tetras
6 zebra danios
and 12 platy babies about a month old and about 3/4's an inch in length
1 mystery fish (just appeared before any fish introduced, must've been an egg in a plant) will get pic for identifying as soon as I can.

My intention was to get more fish but when discovered I had fry decided to wait until they got a bit bigger.

Anyway I was told these were all peaceful fish but one of the babies has had his tailfin 'nipped' very badly, theres not much left!

My plan is to buy 30 or 40 ltr tank after work, put some of the big tank water in and transfer him to it perhaps along with another small baby for company. Is this the way to go?

Also is 12 platys too many, do they prefer smaller groups?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks Suzee xx

If they are small babies they might have had their tails nipped by one off the other fish or the 'mystery fish' (can we have a pic of that please :) )
I dont know about the size groups they like to be in but I usually keep in a ratio of 1 male to every 2/3 females.

I'd leave him/her be. The stress of moving it may bring on finrot, which is not good. Also, moving the big tanks water into the spare tank will not cycle it, so you'd be putting the fish into a tank that is not cycled, and feeding it heavily. This will subject the poor thing to ammonia which will probibly kill it  Please don't do it.

Keep an eye out for the offender, and keep get the spare tank o stand-by. Once you know the culprit, move the mature media accross to the new tank to seed it, and hopefuly have it "instantly cycled" :good: Moving fish is stressful, so only do it if you have to. Also, don't move more than 1/4 of you mature media in one go, as this will knock out your large tanks filter. Allow it a couple of weeks after replacing the media before removing any more :good:

id say it would of been your neons, i had nothing but trouble from mine when i first put them in the tank. after time though mine have settled down and there fins have grown back

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

I haven't maoved any of them yet. The new tanks set up but I'll let it cycle. The water is very cloudy and doesn't seem to want to settle, so not putting anybody in there.

Also now theres a tetra who seems to be 'nipped', again he's very small. Is this very sore for them?
