I have floss but only because it came with my filters. Dunno what it does, I hear notions of 'polishing'
floss takes out all the little bits of dirt that the sponges can't and i's better when u have floss as ur water don't get cloudy. cheep as well
My water is never cloudy in the tanks without floss. I have floss in my 2 biggest tanks, the others don't and are always clear.

well every tank is different dats why we're here. and i've got carbon in the tank, when it goes in (after the wash) little bits of carbon gets caught in that floss so i don't get black stuff in da tank.
ANP Plus it keeps the snails out of the tank.

ya dats right ant i't ya know what i is saying iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I use AquaClears, with filter floss added, on many of my tanks, so that's what I voted for.

But depending on the fish, I also use box filters, and sponge filters. My frogs have no filtration and need none.

Sponges are filter inserts used for AquaClear filters, and perhaps other kinds as well.

Filter floss is spun polyether that is used to filter out solid particles and provide extra surface area for beneficial bacteria to cling to. I fill the chamber above the sponges in my AquaClear filters with this and find it very effective. It is also the media used to fill box filters which are inexpensive and work well in small tanks.

Here's a link about box filters:

This is filter floss:

I have a Juwel so I use the standard Juwel internal with carbon removed (I use plant fertiliser) and an extra coarse sponge. I also have a Fluval 204 with carbon removed, Fluval pre-filter, Bio-max and with peat granules and Rowaphos added. No floss

I have a UG, and a aquaclear 200 with carbon and sponge in my 10 gallon, and in my cycleing 90 which the ac will be moved to i have a fluval 403 with those bio cylinder tubes, and gravel, and sponge, carbon, and floss whereever there was still room

I use dual eheim canisters, 2215 and 2213. I don't use carbon (makes water change color if not taken out after 1-2 months), don't use floss (clogs up too quickly), and my water is clear and perfect. Just use sponges and biomax. Also, I only clean the filter every 1-2 months.
