I run both an internal and external filter and have been considering replacing the white floss in my internal filter with a cloth (The ones from kitchens, blue and white striped) however was wondering if these have been treated or are not suitable in any way. Any help is appreciated.

wouldnt bother risking it

if you're thinking off trying to save some money as they can be quie expensive to replace all of the time i'd go to a decent aquatic retailer and buy some pond filter floss and cut it down to size. Saves loads of cash:)

What we call filter floss in the aquarium hobby is called pillow stuffing material by people who do a lot of sewing. You can buy huge amounts of it for almost nothing as long as all you need is floss. If you need structural material as well, not the loose looking pillow stuffing, you can buy it in bulk at a local pet shop fairly reasonably priced.

Just make sure it isnt "fire retardent" that adative is quite nasty.

what about unused cigarette filters, i have considered using them myself in the past but as i have some of the pads left i haven't tried them yet

As an ex-smoker, I certainly thought that there must be some use for used cigarette filters DayzofSpeed. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I have yet to find anything that I could use a filter for except as a cigarette filter. Mine quit being used when I gave up smoking, the same day I went into surgery for my neck cancer.

Please consider joining the ranks of the former smokers before it catches up with you. I can well remember how much I hated former smokers who had a holier than thou attitude but you would do much for yourself if you found a way to ditch that addiction habit . I got past it using the trans-dermal nicotine patches, since I was chemically addicted. Other people have had success with other methods. BTW I am a 9 year cancer survivor.

Now that we have that rant behind us, it would take an enormous number of those filters to be effective as a filter for anything much more than what they were meant to filter.

i wasnt suggesting just the filters, the original question was using something as a replacement for the throwaway white pad. Btw congrats on the 9 yr survival thing keep it up
