can I put a new filter straight into an established planted tank.

Welcome to the forum Costatbost.
A new filter can indeed be put onto a planted tank, or any other tank. It would be a mistake to expect a new filter to provide the needed biological filtration for such a tank. If you have a new filter and can retain the existing filter in place, that would be a safer way top transition from one filter to another. Typical values for a fairly dependable clone of the existing filter would require running both together for a period of at least 6 or more weeks.
