ive got a 42 gallon tank and ive got the latest fluvel filter no 4 but it doesnt seem to filter much of the stuff in my tank and ive got fluvel no 3 in my other tank and that works fine it is a smaller tank is that why

the fluval 4 has a max tank size rating of 215 liters (56 US gallons) so it should be able to cope with your tank. Have you got the outflow adjuster set to max output?

also have you cleaned it out recently? I have noticed that the output drops conciderably over time as it gets full of debris.

Well stated ricey, my thoughts exactly. The canister get less and less eficient the dirtier they get, and also double check the instructions and diagrams, it may not be assembled correctly.

They are not really the sort of filters that are assembled as such. It may be, like Ricey suggested, that you have not got it to the max or that it needs cleaned.

Do you have a high bioload? If you do a filter that would normally work for that size tank will not properly due to the tank having stocking for a bigger tank.

I have a fluval 4+ in my 160 lite (45US gallons) and it works really well.

:)
