Normal filters "work" in exactly the same way in saltwater as they do in freshwater. The problem is that normal filters trap detritus and allow the formation of nitrates which in a saltwater setup can be toxic to many invertebrates in levels exceeding 20ppm. If not toxic, high nitrates can inhibit calcification and therefore be detrimental to coral health and growth.

We saltwater aquarists need a product that can remove ammonia, and nitrate, and to that end we use nature's filter: Live Rock (LR). LR is rubble and rocks straight off of coral reefs. It comes with a myriad of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate eating bacteria and comes with beneficial micro-invertebrates and beneficial algaes that can keep detritus under control and nitrates low. We use powerheads or other plumbing to create flowrates in our tanks to help the LR do its job effectively
