I just bought a 55G tank from one of my buddy and I want to setup a fish with live rock tank. I'm pretty sure the filter that came with the tank is not good enough for the tank since it was use as a freshwater tank. I have no idea what kind of filter to look at. Please post yours filter suggestions and I will research them and base my decision on that.

Thank you for you time

After reading a few posts on the forum I came up with a couple good ideas. I'm going to go with dual Filters just for redundancy and it seems like the over filtration is not a sin.....:) I looked at the RENA® Filstar® xP2
last night. Seems to be a pretty good filter. What other company should I look at?

Thanx

Eheim are meant to be v.good and it's what I was advised to get when I started my tank. Fluval have mixed reviews, there have been to many reports of dud seals and flooded living rooms for me to ever confidently buy one. There's a newish brand tetratech which some people are recommending but being new there's not much long term data on how well they last.

Which country are you in ?

Makes a big difference to what we can recommend that would be available to you.

if your wanting to do a SW tank it's probably best to post in that section as you'd be more likely to get the attention of people who have a similar set up to what your looking for. From my research into marine it's best to go with a sump for filtration if you can afford it and have room. If not then a hang on the back filter is probably your next best option. Not 100% sure myself I'm just in the process of researching and setting up a marine tank too and that's what my reckoning comes too. :)

Best filtration for most salty tanks is live rock and some powerheads. Rather than buy a filter you will be far better off buying a skimmer. The Tunze skimmers are meant to be awesome.

Sumps are an excellent addition to any tank (except FW planted) and work fantastically with SW.

If you don't mind doing maintenance then a wet/dry filter with a large DSB, large skimmer and heavy macro growth works well.

Well I got myself 2 RENA XPS2 for my tank. It is definitly overkill, but if one of them died the other one will be more than sufficient to support the tank.

Thank you for you guys input

Have Fun!!!
