ok I just got a filter for my 5.5 g. It's "Elite", sponge filter. The guy at the store gave me this little pump to go with it, and it's blowing a lot of bubbles and what seems to me like, giving a current and I don't think bettas like that too much. Am I on the right track? Is it supposed to be quite loud? The pump thing vibrates quite a bit . I just wanna make sure I got the right stuff here.

You can get a vaulve to put in the airline between the pump and the sponge filter and then you will be able to turn the flow down if you think it is a bit strong. Unfortunately the pumps do tend to vibrate. Some are quieter than others but you can never tell until you use them.... Try standing the pump on a mouse mat. :)

k thanks so much. so technically the a pump and a filter are the same thing?

The actual filter is the sponge bit in the tank, the pump drives air through the filter because the good bacteria won't survive without a flow of water.
