Did I understand it correct? You don't know what filter and heater mean?

Well, filter is a device that circulater water through e.g. filtersponges/material. There is internal and external filters. They use to collect dirt from water and there is some biological activities too. Basic idea of filtration (lucky, it's in english B) )

Heater is heater. Without heater water water may be too cold for most of fishes. Some of them live in cooler water, but most of them (aquarium fishes) live in tropical clímate and need warm water. It depends on fishes. Heater is a small device that keep temperature of water steady - heaters

i dont even know what the carbon thingy is?

What about carbon? Carbondioxide, CO2? KH? Carbon filtersponge (put it sometimes into filter)? Or what about it?

*L* :D
i know what a heater and a filter do, i just dont know anything about certain brands, or which ones work best (UGF??). i heard somebody say they had to replace or remove the carbon? is that the peice you stick in the filter?( i know its also like an element)?
thanks for the page. i will be reading it as you can see i am totally fishy illiterate :D

It's ancient history  Some hobbiest put water flow reverse to avoid ugf to go blocked. They use to go blocked easily and some bottom fishes can swim under them.

I haven't found any ugf from our lfs...

Very good brand is Eheim in filtration and Jäger in heaters.

or which ones work best

HMF

After that some canister filters (external), internals are worst but good in mechanical filtration e.g. to keep water clear.

i heard somebody say they had to replace or remove the carbon?

Carbon is used to put into filter when removing some compound from water, e.g. after medication when you want get rid of the rest (of that medicine).
