I love my canister filter, it's awesome! I can have many different types of layers in it and that really helps! My tank is sparkling clean with it :D

my dad has a canister filter and his aquarium is always crystal clear! Unfortunately i dont have that kind of money and my tank is always a little bit cloudy :(

I'm a big fan of canisters and put my vote there, but I have, or have had, perfectly clear tanks running off of hanging power filters and air driven sponge filters. The fact is no filter will keep an aquarium clean and healthy if the tank is not maintained properly, and any filter will get the job done if it is.

Please excuse my ignorance- but what the heck is a sponge filter? I have been trying to figure that out for the longest time... :S

It's basically a sponge that is capable of holding a large amount of benificial bacteria. It can be run with an air pump or powerhead to get water moving through it. These filters are for biological filtration only, not mechanical. They are cheap, simple and effective, but rather unsightly and loud when run by an air pump.

If I had the money, I would get the same filtration system they have on the shuttle. This basically can convert your urine back to drinking water. Imagine having that in your tanks. You would probably NEVER have to change the water, just top it off.

Otherwise, I would have to contend with an external canister filter.

I will definetly go for the canister. I also like the hang on the backs. But my cansiter keeps my 135g sparkling.
