:) I'm looking to divide a 10 gallon tank to house a few males. What's the best filter system to use for that. Something in a reasonable price line.

By the way, here's a young combtail.

Don't use filters for your betta's, they don't like filters. Due to the filters strong current, it sucked in my betta and ripped up his tail, and the betta's are too weak to stay out of the current without a struggle.

All four of my betta tanks are filtered, and they are 5, 10, 12 and 20 gallons. And I would never have an unfiltered 10+ gallon tank, but that is my personal choice. Just divide it off if your betta doesn't like it. Get one with a low current (I use whisper filters) and I think they'd be fine. I've never had one get sucked into it :p

Yeah, I have about 20 gallon, goldfish too so high current.

How many are you planning to have in the 10 gallon?
I have a Penguin 100 in my 10 gallon. I love it. It is
nice and quiet, plus I can control the current. Someone
else might come along and have better advise for you.

i am not knowlegdable enough about bettas but in a 10 or more gallon I would have a filter. A filter that has a control of min or max filter and turbulence of water, the less turbulence the better. I have mine in a 3 gallonb and I do a 100% change every week because of no filter, but you do not have to do that in a 10 or 30 gallon, a waste of water if you have a filter. That would be alot of work, if you have enough of time and patience of taking 2 or more bettas out of tank and change al the water every week. Some people have a 30 gallon split for many bettas, they have a filter so they don't have to change all the water every week. Over 5 gallons I think it is smart to have a filter.

:D I've gotten tired of changing 11 tanks all the time and decided to set up a couple of ten gallon tanks with compartments and cycle them so I don't have to worry about them with a filter. I've also been thinking about running a false back and putting the filter behind that. It would stop the hard flow. Most of my bettas have gotten fairly used to filters though as they are running in all the grow out tanks. The bio wheel has gotten heavy in the one so they no longer get flung across the tank in the current. I think a couple of them miss that.

Well, I just got a penguin 150 filter for my 30 gallon divided tank, and current killed it with a gatorade bottle (I needed something BIG) It is in Sky's compartment, since his is in the middle, and he has had no problems with it. The water at the front stays still. I might boil a sponge and stick a strip of sponge into the 'tunnel' of the bottle current killer, so there will be virtually no current.

Fantastic idea! I'm just finishing cycling a 5 gallon myself. I recently bought several 5 gallon set ups and I'm dividing them in 2 and cycling them for my bettas to live in. I don't know a lot of the names for filters, but something that is adjustable to lower the flow is best. None of mine are bothered by the current of my filters, or even UGF's in the tanks that have them. I find some intentionally playing in the current at times too. You'll find it so much easier to keep up!

Either that or get a filter with adjustable flow. I have a Penguin something in my 20-gallon sorority and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. If you're worried about their tails getting sucked into the intake, just wrap some filter material or something around the intake. That should prevent anything bad from happening.

:) Thanks for the info... the sooner the better. I just cleaned three tanks and then watched the little devils - young bettas - squeeze thru a couple small gaps and have a go at the guy next door. I was lucky that I got to them before they really went at it. Grrrr.... they are sneaky little devils.

I have a Hagen Aquaclear sponge filter in my 10 gal...I love it and it keeps my tank in great shape!
