I voted yes.

I will say that as a general rule the answer is yes, especially if you are going to put something besides just one betta in it. One thing to consider however is whether the betta can rip or tear his fins/tail on anything in the tank. I am having a terrible time with one of my bettas now.

I had been treating for fin rot but finally realized that since his bottom fin was not damaged at all that he was actually just ripping his tail. I isolated him in a breeder box in my 29 gallon for 10 days and his tail and fins were looking muh better with a lot of good regrowth. I put him back in a tank that I thought was safe but after two days, I am seeing the same rips and chunks out of his tail. It has to be where he is getting it caught on something on the filter of the heater.

I am almost certain that I will move him to an unfiltered/unheated tank by this weekend. I have had unheated tanks in the past and the temp stays around 76 degrees. I will just have to do daily water changes but don't know what else to do to keep him from tearing himself up.

If its just for a betta, then you don't really need one. As said before, most are happier with no filter current. If you're putting something like cories in there, I'd say yes because the bioloads a bit bigger.

Or you can get a sponge filter---the kind that hook up to your air pump, that way if you have a gang valve you can adjust how small you want the current to be. You can pick them up for $3 at Petsmart.

i voted yes, because if it were me i would get tired of luggint the 6.5 gal to the sink for 100% water changes
