hi i have a new fish tank coming soon 8 gallon hex and i already have brought fluval filter for this tank i was wondering if i could run the new filter in my current 15 gallon tank for a couple of weeks before new tank arrives and will this help cycling cycle so when i put filter in new tank it will have some good bactira in it.
the filter is a fluvaL 1 UNDERWATER FILTER .i will still be running normal filter in my tank.

:D that would certainly help with the cycling in the new tank - but once you put the filter into the new tank IMO you will need to have something in there to keep feeding those bacteria .........I did it with a juvenile pair of guppies......and - was careful not to overfeed them. That way the filter coped and didn't get an ammonia/nitrite spike....however I did w/changes and tested the water very frequently for the first month or so

what are you planning to keep in the new tank?

sue :D

hi thanks for reply just wanted to put filter in my established tank to give it a kick start for when new tank arrives i dont no what to put in there any advice i currently have a 15 gallon tank which i have 1 male betta 1 thick lipped gourami 5 blak neons 2 platy i did by new tank for for betta as i didnt think betta and gourami would get on put they get on very well alwas swimming together. i was thinking of putting betta 2 platys and maybe 2 corys for bottom . or may leave them all in 15 gallon and get new fish .what do u think will work best.

IMO the more materials you can get out of your existing tank into your new tank the better. Without obviously removing too much to damage your exixting tank. Fish wise, i would still build up very slowly in your new tank. Pre conditioning the filter wil not give your tank an immediate cycle. Do frequent water checks.
