I got a filter(air) w/ my 50 gallon, but I don't know how to set it up. The guy I got it from said I could get the cartridges from Petsmart, so I'll go there and ask them if they know how to set it up. I might try Walmart, but I'm not sure if they have (air) filters for 50 gallon tanks.

Petsmart is really expensive, but where else could I go to get a filter for a 50 gallon?

try all your little lfs's - sometimes they are very expensive, sometimes they have little suprises!! :hey:

I got my filter on ebay. I got the Rena XP1 canister filter for $35.00 + $15.00 for shipping. That filter sells at Petsmart for $119.00 and $150.00 at my LFS. It was new in the box and works great. Since you are in US you could try ebay. Just watch out for the shipping fees on some products they can be high.

How does a canister filter work? (Cartridges, electricity, extra expenses, etc.) I have almost no money. I'd say I could spend about $40 on it, and that's not a lot. Plus, the cartridges'll probably cost a lot as well...

My canister cost $50.00 total and really does not cost anything to operate. I just replace the filter floss once a month. You can get that really cheap at LFS. I'd pick out a filter you like and then price it on ebay. A lot of people love their bio wheels, they would also be a great choice for your tank. Here's a link to the rena

Here's info on a biowheel it is the Emperor 400 Bio-Wheel Filter on sale for $40.00. I think that S&H are about $6.00. That's a pretty good price. Maybe some bio wheel dude can tell you if this would be enough for your tank. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod...3562&in_merch=1

I've ordered from this company, very reliable. They will send you a free catalog also. It has tons of good info in it also.

I would spend as much money as you can on the filter. It's the most important thing in your tank. If you get a cheap filter that cannont clean a 50g properly you are going to have trouble. And guaranteed you will want to stock this tank to the max someday and you'll end up replacing the filter for a better one. Best to get a good one to begin with.

Yeah, but they're over forthy bucks! I can't get enough $ in time... I'll still take the old one to Petsmart to see what they say. I'll look for a filter at lfs or Walmart.

Darn it, I hate being broke...
