I have an aquaquip 300 (I guess an US brand) external filter (waterfall type) and a powerhead. I have a 55 gallon tank with several fish. Do I need a bigger filter system?

thanks

Never heard of an aquaquip but you should have at least 400 to 500 gallons per hour filtration anyway. minimum for a 55 gallon tank. more if you have large fish. You're headed for trouble with those fish listed in your sig. Only one rtbs per tank, one will kill the other. Those 2 balas will outgrow that 55 and need a much larger tank, start saving pennies. The three clown loaches will get huge too. And the pleco, depending on what kind it is may get massive also. You need a much bigger tank if you want to keep all that, let alone another filter. Although another filter will help til you get a bigger tank.

If the filter/pump exchange rate is about 3X the tank volume and you keep it reasonably clean it should be fine as long as you keep a watch on your nitrate stats and do a regular water change/gravel vac. The waterfall effect should give the fish a good supply of oxygen.

Thanks, I check frequently and my stats hover in the 0's except the nitrate 5-10 ppm. I also frequent water changes. I have not yet rinsed the sponge filter (but the tank cycled only 3-4 weeks ago).

actually, power filters require 5 to 10 times water circulation.

3 times would be for a canister filter.

however, if your water is clear and ammonia/nitrites are 0, then it's ok for now. if you add fish though, you mgiht need to upgrade filters as well
