Hi does anyone know where would be the best place to buy some filter sponges?
i have an air pump and i want to put a sponge on the end to form a filter cos i only have a small tank for my betta

Yes, I'd like to know where to buy filter sponges too! I'm going to get shrimp so I think a sponge filter would be good for them so that the baby shrimp don't get sucked in.

there is someone on ebay sells filter sponge in different grades (fine, coarse and carbon impregnated) and its in small cubes, really good for filling odd shaped filters and cheap too. Another person sells the sponge by the sheet so you can cut your own sizes/shapes.....might be worth a try?

So what makes aquarium sponges different to normal household ones?
Just asking what alot of people are probably thinking

The have larger pores. But you can use a regular household sponge for a sponge filter. But if you can, look for ones with marger pores. They work better.

ah ok thanx think that might work out abit cheaper will look for both though thanx

The biggest difference between a filter sponge and a household sponge is that the filter sponge has what is called an open cell structure to it. A household sponge usually has a closed cell structure. The closed cell is better for absorbing things because of those closed cells, water won't run out of it as fast when you are using it. The open cell structure means that water will run right through it, which is what we want with a filter. Cell size needs to be properly chosen for a filter or household use but the cell structure definitely affects performance.
