Having read the info that came with my filter I am concerned it maybe too small. It says it is capable of use upto 20 UK Galls, my tank is bigger than this. Should i upgrade to a larger filter and if so, what would be the correct procedure for replacement, I would have to run both at the same time for a while to enable the new filter to collect the required bacteria wouldn't I?

I currently run an internal filter, what would be the best solution for the tank in my sig?

If this is going to be the only filter in your tank then yes you must upgrade the filter to one that will handle at a minimum 32 gals. It should have a throughput that is about 4 times your water volume.
Running both filters on the tank until the new one has a strong bacterial colony would be the best way to do the switch. The type of filter internal/external is your call and preference. HTH :)
