I have been looking for ages for the ideal filter but can’t seem to find one, I would like a HOB that is small ish, quite, and has enough room for me to store my own media, aswell as an adjustable flow rate. (It needs to have a uk plug) and my budget is around £20 (willing to go to £25) anyone got any suggestions ? Also whilst I’m here, I also need a 75watt heater if anyone has any good suggests for relatively in expensive ones. Thank you

I have the Nicrew Slim HOB which I used on a small fry tank with no issues. However, it's rated to use with tanks up to 20L which is not a large amount of water, for something bigger and in your budget have a look at this Superfish HOB. They also make a 100W Heater. I have only ever used AquaOne Quartz heaters I'm afraid.

Do watch/read reviews as I've not owned most of the products I've listed.

What is the size of your aquarium ?

What you described, looks like an Aquaclear... To me...

It's the most easy to hack of them all. And the media housing is 3 stages 100% customizable. You get a fourth one if you install an intake cover sponge.

No pads, no cartridges, no waste. You can fill them with a combination of sponges, bio-balls, ceramic, lava rock, floss, some even put plants in there.

The parts are interchangeable between many models and the filters can be customized to a great degree.

I'm unable to find out if you are able to get them easily from my side, but check them out.

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, they are almost £100 for me

:( If you can get it, you will love it for sure.

But that's insane... On amazon in Canada I can get a model A615 for 64$cad for 150l-250l or A600 for 40l-110l for 57$cad.

Today there is 2 lines of Aquaclear filters, and the model numbers I gave, points to the good old version.

The AC50 and A615 there's also a A610

Those Fluval (and other name brand) hang on the tank filters are very expensive. I have a cheapy on the back of a tank downstairs that has black bar endlers and cherry shrimp. I'm paranoid about the nitrates with the shrimp, so I tried to fit the Nitrazorb bag into one of them with a little bit of K2 media. Two days later I had water coming out from under the door to the room it's in. It was dripping out the back even though the filter has a pretty tight lid. Not enough space.

Anway, I went to Petco to get another filter- I don't need a really good one, just one with enough room for the Nitrazorb. I already have 2 sponges in the tank.

There was one for $60 - the Fluval, and one for $19.99- "Imagitarium" - the Petco brand. I bought the Imagitarium one LOL. We'll see how it does.

I do have an Aquaclear on the back of my 75 gallon (it's in addition to the FX4) and it definitely is much easier to do whatever you want with it- I have a big bag of K2 media and a couple of sponges- but it comes with a massive price tag.

You'd think one of the cheapy brands would just copy the design and offer pretty much the same thing. Can't be that hard to change it enough to avoid getting sued?

Yeah, The most difficult ones are those the water flows back to front.

When they operate from bottom to top it's much easier.

Check out Cobalt Total Nitrate. It’s a resin that you load into a 200 micron mesh bag. If your filter box is small, you load up a small mesh bag. I have them on all my tanks since the well water has a nitrate level of 30 ppm. Alternatively you can open the Nitrazorb bag and take out enough resin for a small mesh bag. NitroZorb is a mixture of resins. Some bind nitrate and some bind ammonia. Cobalt resin only binds nitrate.
