I've got a old UGF and an old Whisper 2 power filter. The tube for the UGF is around 1 1/4" as opposed to everything now that is 1" and it turned a nasty color. I was leaning toward not having a UGF at all since that seems to be most people's preference. Can you run a 40 gallon tank with a power filter as the only filter in the tank? I'd be getting a new power filter like a Bio-Wheel(unless I find they are too noisy) or Aqua Clear or something like that. I'm not sure which is best. Would i need something to move the water for the power filter like with a GF? Thanks.

I highly recommend the Emperor 400 biowheel filters. I have 2 on my 55 and will never buy anything different for my tanks. You should also have a powerhead or 2 for water movement. And ditch the UGF.

cant argue with that advice. I love the emperor biowheel filters. :)

I went to a store near my house(Superpetz to be exact) to get an Emperor 400 but they were $83.00 US. Tomorrow I'm going to drive up thet That Fish Place to get one for $45. I was amazed at such a difference in price!
