Hi all

i have been out of fishkeeping for 8 years or so and have found myself to be a bit rusty, so hopefully looking for a bit of guidance.

the question is 2x fluval 404 external filters or 2x rena xp3 external filters

the tank is 350 litres and is going to be a african cichlid setup.

the reason i ask is that the tank came with the rena filters and has now been running for 3 weeks and is almost ready for the first fish, but the humming noise from the filter motors is driving me mad and the water still looks abit on the cloudy side. i had fluval filters many years ago and do not remember any noise from them

looking forward to here your comments

Dave

My prefference would be for the fluvals but I preffer their internal ones over the external ones. I've never used anything rena other than air pumps so I suppose I'm biased. You are correct about fluvals being quiet though and they are the filters I usualy use (the internal ones). Are these two brands the only ones you could use?

well there is ehiem filters which i know are fantatic but then so is the price, had a look at some today and are 3 if not 4 times the price, and this time of year the money tree is looking a bit bare

I understand fully :p Still, eheims are great... maybe you can get one fluval and one eheim? The price is worth it...
