filter question

I don't know what it is called, but I have a Penguin 400 bio-wheel filter, and you stick the one part in the water, that sucks in the water and travels up to the filter area and comes out the top. There are extension pieces for this "stem" part. I am just wondering how far does it need to go down. Or if it doesn't matter.

The most important thing is that the filter intake is NOT sited right next to the outflow, because then you have the same water going round and round the filter, while the rest of the tank doesn't get much filtering at all.

I usually have the intake near the bottom of the tank - which I think is most common.

Yeah, lowering down the filter intake really helps with filtering the whole tank!
