I have a 50 gal tank set up in my bedroom with a Whisper 60 filter on it. I've seen posts where people say they have their filters on a timer. Could I do this so that it is off at night while i sleep? Or is that too long of a time to have the filter off.

Lights on a timer are a good thing, filters on a timer are a bad thing. You risk killing off your nitrifying bacteria.

Here here ! Id say turning the filter off for longer than a hour or so it a bad thing... it NEEDS a constant source of oxygen.
