My filter has recently started making a slight grinding noise, almost like there are airbubbles caught in the impellor having not been primed correctly, but not stopping.

I've had the fillter for about 4 months, there are no blockages and the sponges were cleaned recently.

Any idea what the cause / solution could be?

Have you given the hoses a good clean, try giving the filter a shake, that will tell you if there are any air bubbles trapped.
When i clean the filter i leave it empty and hook up the inlet side but leave the outlet taps seperated, suck on the outlet side and the syphon effect will fill the filter and get rid of any air blockages, i close the tap when water is starting to come out the outlet hose before it reaches the tap, do up the taps, open them up plug it in and violla no air locks. the 2213's are usually ultra reliable, i have used 3 amongst other Ehaim for a couple of years and never had any probs.
Did the filter get noisy after being cleaned? Make sure the impellor, cover and rubber shaft mounts are correctly installed.

Thanks for the input.

Air bubbles shouldn't be a problem as I let the filter run out into a bowl to make sure there's water all the way through. I'll give the impelor a good clean out though.
